U.S. Department Of Transportation
New Texting And Mobile Phone Restrictions For Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Drivers

FMCSA has published new rules that restrict texting and the use of hand-held mobile phones by truck and bus drivers while operating a commercial motor vehicle (CMV).

Research commissioned by FMCSA shows the odds of being involved in a safety-critical event (e.g., crash, near-crash, unintentional lane deviation) are 23.2 times greater for CMV drivers who text while driving than for those who do not. Texting drivers took their eyes off the forward roadway for an average of 4.6 seconds. At 55 mph, this equates to a driver traveling 371 feet, or the approximate length of a football field (including the end zones)—without looking at the roadway!

What exactly is “Texting”?

Texting means manually entering text into, or reading text from, an electronic device.

Texting includes (but is not limited to), short message services, e-mailing, instant messaging, a command or request to access a Web page, pressing more than a single button to initiate or terminate a call using a mobile telephone, or engaging in any other form of electronic text retrieval or entry, for present or future communication.

What does this rule mean to you?

Fines and Penalties - Texting while driving can result in driver disqualification. Penalties can be up to $2,750 for drivers and up to $11,000 for employers who allow or require drivers to use a hand-held communications device for texting while driving.

Disqualification - Multiple convictions for texting while driving a CMV can result in a driver disqualification by FMCSA. Multiple violations of State law prohibiting texting while driving a CMV that requires a CDL is a serious traffic violation that could result in a CDL driver being disqualified for up to 120 days.

MGM Resorts Elevates Guest Service With Unified Radio And Broadband Communications

MGM Resorts International® is one of the largest hospitality and entertainment companies in the world. The company’s 15-plus properties are some of the most prestigious luxury brands on the Las Vegas Strip, including MGM Grand, The Mirage, the Monte Carlo, Luxor, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay and Aria.

MGM Resorts needed to pursue a new push-to-talk solution because their existing cellular technology was nearing its end of life. “We used Sprint/Nextel for point to point communication across the company for all our midline and front line employees and some management staff,” says Jim Kimball, Executive Director of Enterprise Telecommunications Services. “So when that push-to-talk system was decommissioned, it created a communication gap that we needed to fill.”

MOTOTORBO opens up a world of possibilities for hospitality staff with crystal-clear audio, integrated voice and data on one device, applications such as text messaging, GPS location tracking, work order ticket management and more. And MOTOTRBO digital radios provide 40 percent longer battery life and greater capacity – essential for round-the-clock operations.

 Next-Generation MOTOTRBO

Employee Productivity Soars with Next-Generation MOTOTRBO™ from Motorola Solutions

In manufacturing, government services, transportation and other industries, downtime equates to increased costs and loss of productivity. Motorola Solutions has introduced Next-Generation MOTOTRBO™, a line of digital radios with features such as Wi-Fi connectivity that can help save workers hundreds of hours in lost time while delivering highly secure, reliable and cost-efficient professional two-way radio communications.

Whether they are plant workers or teachers, the process of updating user’s communications equipment can be time-intensive. For a workforce of 350, for example, this can lead to more than 400 hours of lost time.  Next-generation MOTOTRBO radios feature an integrated Wi-Fi solution that helps reduce the update process to a matter of minutes by eliminating the need for employees in the field, classroom or warehouse floor to physically drop off equipment at the office to receive software upgrades. Coupled with 29 hours of battery life, this means workers can spend more time focusing on the task at hand.

What’s New in These Next Generation Radios
The dramatic enhancements to the MOTOTRBO portfolio deliver the audio quality, coverage, battery life and built-in intelligence that allows users to work confidently and safely.

Safety

  • Indoor and outdoor location tracking – finds people quickly even in the grounds and generates reminders if they enter Hazardous Locations (HazLoc), or back-of-house areas
  • Integrated accelerometer - detects movement and issues alerts if the worker appears to be motionless, or to have fallen
  • Integrated Audio – adjust volume automatically in line with background noise, such as a busy classroom, fluctuating road noise, and the clamor of a busy environment
  • Good for the environment - radios meet and exceed all regulations for minimizing potentially hazardous substances

Efficiency

  • Remote software update over Wi-Fi - radios can be managed from a central location, with no need to bring them back to base for maintenance
  • Redesigned audio amplifier – speech is much clearer, especially at high volumes
  • Dual–port microphone - reduces wind noise, to help staff working outside
  • Optional SINC+ noise cancelation – improves clarity by reducing background noise, such as revving engines in loading bays, a crowded reception area, where housekeeping staff are vacuuming, or road noise
  • Doubled RAM and Flash storage – future-ready capacity supports new features as they introduced

Productivity

  • Range increased up to 8% - coverage further across sites and campuses
  • Increased power – SL 7000e Series power increased from2 Watts to 3 Watts and can be reduced to 2 Watts to conserve battery life
  • Extended battery life – low-voltage technology gives up to 25% long run-time with existing batteries
  • Enhanced durability – improved sealing to keep out dust and water
  • Silent alert – vibrating belt clip for selected models ensures users don’t miss alerts in noisy environments, such as warehouses or loading bays

Motorola Solutions FM To UL Transition

Motorola Solutions FM to UL transition

What You Need to Know about the FM To UL Transition

Starting January 1, 2016, Motorola Solutions Intrinsically Safe radios will be accredited with the TIA-4950 standard for Hazardous Location certification of two-way radios by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and will no longer produce Intrinsically Safe two-way radios approved to the Factory Mutual (FM) standard FM3610_88, which expired in 2012.

As you and your radio fleet move into the new year with the new standard, keep these four things in mind to ensure a smooth transition:

  • FM radios will stay intrinsically safe.
FM approved radios that are deployed in the field will maintain their FM Intrinsically Safe approval status, provided that any service and repairs are done at an FM audited repair facility. All Motorola radios shipped after January 1, 2016 will be UL certified, and FM approved aftermarket batteries will continue to be available for fielded units.
  • FM and UL approve the radio and battery together as a system.
The FM approved battery may only be used on an FM approved radio, and the UL approved battery may only be used on a UL approved radio, otherwise the certification is not valid. However, your can operate with both FM and UL approved radios in your fleet.
  • New UL batteries will be marked, and made available throughout 2016.
MOTOTRBO™ Radios and batteries certified to TIA-4950 have been available since Q1 2015. They are labelled clearly with the new UL markings: black label, white font, white dot. ASTRO 25 APX UL batteries are currently available for the APX 4000 series, and batteries for the other APX radios will be staggered throughout the first half of 2016.
  • Classification matters.
Know Division, Class and Group rather than simply "FM Approved" or "Intrinsically Safe". Hazardous locations can be found in many industries, including refineries, fuel storage facilities, chemical plants, grain elevators and plastics processing plants. Motorola Solutions does not determine the need for hazardous location (HazLoc) products, nor evaluates the environment. The need for HazLoc products, and the classification of the specific environment, is determined by various jurisdictional authorities such as fire marshals, insurance providers, facility safety experts, etc. Check with your local authority to confirm the HazLoc requirements for your fleet.
